Petra Zmrzlá, Magda Sučková and Pavel Sedláček represented the Department of Foreign Languages at Minding the Gaps: 12th Brno International Conference of English, American, and Canadian Studies, which took place at their alma mater—the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. The two linguists sparked a lively debate with their paper on expressing praise and criticism in dissertation reviews, while the Canadianist Pavel Sedláček discussed the history and the present state of little-known American and Canadian exclaves. Apart from providing numerous inspirational impulses for the participants’ future scholarly work, the conference also brought new academic contacts and strengthened the existing ones.
